Let’s think about Project Hail Mary and the ancient narrative of Exodus—specifically the similarities between Rocky and Bezalel.
Exodus 31 —> Bezalel is filled with the Spirit of God to become a master artisan, physically forging the Ark of the Covenant and the Tabernacle. His task was to construct a physical vessel capable of containing the direct presence of God—a force so holy and unyielding that touching it improperly meant death, yet it was the exact dwelling place required to save and lead His people.
Similarly, Rocky—a master engineer—must physically construct containers and breeding facilities capable of holding Astrophage: a terrifying, volatile force of raw stellar energy capable of wiping out worlds AND powering their redemption.
Both characters are hands-on builders thrust into a high-stakes, high-risk endeavors of redemption. They do not merely pray or hypothesize; they measure, cut, weld, and build the physical conduits through which salvation is achieved.
This high-risk participation is not reserved for fictional heroes or ancient biblical figures—it is the position God puts all of us in. …In Matthew 10:16, Jesus tells His followers: “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.”
God insists on involving frail human beings in His redemptive plan, despite how exposed and inadequate we feel. Just like Dr. Ryland Grace, who begins his mission terrified, reluctantly dragged out of his comfort zone, feeling entirely like a helpless “sheep” thrown into the cosmos.
Methinks no historical figure illustrates this mysterious, participation in God’s enigmatic plan better than Joseph (a.k.a. Zaphenath-Paneah).
Joseph was betrayed, enslaved, and forgotten, yet God leveraged those tragedies (and abuses) into a global rescue plan. When famine threatened the known world, God used a displaced Hebrew prisoner acting as an Egyptian administrator to build granaries and manage logistics.
Zaphenath-Paneah = God enigmatically works through messy human history, placing sheep in key participatory positions to preserve life and execute His broader redemptive agenda.
