The following is an imagined conversation between David and someone trying to play “peacemaker” and “honor” the king.
PTTPP&“H”TK:[1] “Are you gonna accept the king’s invitation to move back to Gibeah and resume your duties as commander and court musician?”
David: “No.”
PTTPP&“H”TK: “Well, king Saul has done some really good things, and I think you need to recognize that. And you need to forgive Saul. And you need to honor Saul by moving back to Gibeah and resuming your duties as commander and court musician. At the end of the day, Saul is still your king, and you must honor him!”
David: “This word… ‘Honor.’ You keep on using it. I don’t’ think you know what it means.”
PTTPP&“H”TK: “Really!?”
David: “Yes. And I think you’re too timid to speak the truth in love. I think that you want me to pander and cater to Saul because you’re scared. And you’re using the language of “honor” in an attempt to manipulate me into joining you on the path of living by fear.”
PTTPP&“H”TK: “Well, I’m going to send you a link to a sermon series by an esteemed, and highly educated, southern theologian about honoring men in positions of authority! And I really think you should listen to it, and take it to heart! I think you have become drunk on the elixir of secular culture. Perhaps your time living amongst the Philistines has corrupted your thinking.”
