“Dealing With Problems”
Nehemiah 13:1-14
Rev. Tyler Dirks
Sermon Outline:
- Discerning The Problem
- Deceitfully vs. Definitely
- Drama & Dependence
Reflection Questions:
- Why didn’t God end the story of Nehemiah in chapter 12? In other words, why not end on a high note of celebration and communal unity and support? Why offer this 13th chapter/epilogue telling us of domestic drama and dysfunction?
- Read Numbers 22-24. Based on this account, would you think that Balaam is a bad guy?
- Imaginatively immerse yourself in the context of Jerusalem in the days of Eliashib and Nehemiah, and honestly ask yourself, “Who’s right (Eliashib or Nehemiah)? Is Eliashib actually evil for aiding and abetting Tobiah? Or is Nehemiah falsely accusing Eliashib?
- How have you sought solutions via politicking and playing the popularity contest?
- What do you think about Nehemiah’s decision to ruin everything Eliashib has worked for by evicting Tobiah?
- When was a time you definitively confronted someone? How did that go?
