G.K. Chesterton said, “People have fallen into a foolish habit of speaking of orthodoxy as something heavy, humdrum, and safe. But the fact is, there never was anything so perilous or so exciting as orthodoxy.” The same could be said for the church. In 1 & 2 Thessalonians we are assailed with perilous and electrifying reminders of who we really are. The church is a community whose King reigns over everyone & everything! The church is a bride who will be called up from the grave to gather with her Husband in the clouds as He destroys all lies and lawlessness by the breath of His mouth! The church is an exceedingly strange family who anchors their hope in the certainty of things unseen. The church is nourished like an infant receiving gentle care from a nursing mother; and at the same time receiving exhortation & warning that, “Anyone not willing to work hard, shall be shamed and forbidden to eat.” The church is a supernatural community, inhabited by God The Spirit at all times in every way in order that He might produce in us insatiable face-to-face affection for God and for one another. From January to June 2022, ECPC will imaginatively inhabit the letters to the church in Thessalonica, in order that we might feast on the fact that the church is an exceedingly peculiar family!
